The Prairie Ensemble: Around the World in One Night
7:30 pm Friday, May 9; Concert conversation at 7:00
McKinley Presbyterian Church in Champaign (5th and John)

The program will feature New York-based Japanese koto player Yoko Reikano Kimura in a koto concerto by Daron Hagen called Genji - named for the 11th-century Tale of Genji. The koto is sometimes called the Japanese harp, though it's more of a very large zither.

Darius Milhaud's jazz-inspired ballet The Creation of the World opens the program, followed by Alan Hovhaness's Tzaikerk ("Evening Song") for flute, violin, timpani and strings, then comes Genji.

Ms. Kimura will provide some half-time music for us, with both playing and singing.

To close the concert, we'll play Felix Mendelssohns ever-popular Symphony No. 4, known as his "Italian" symphony.
